Identifying abstract shapes from real world images is a type of visual critical thinking skill. If the stated alignment is changed to the lower primary range, then this is also appropriate in developing that shape association, and is learning to learn.

This doesn't address any technology use, so I have to presume the idea is to use printed copies of the pictures for students to trace the shapes. But it could easily be modified to do so by mentioning putting up pictures on an interactive whiteboard and asking students to use a line segment drawing tool to trace the shapes they recognize. A wider variety of real world pictures, or asking students to find pictures themselves, could help provide a broader range of interaction for students.

No suggestions for assessment are provided. Students are simply asked to identify and trace shapes from the pictures. An assessment could easily be created asking students to categorize the shapes by attributes, write down attributes of given shapes, or perhaps to check understanding by asking students to go find other pictures that contain designated shapes.
