Water Quality Lesson 3 : Do You Know YOUR Watershed?
1. If you are not using a spray bottle, make four pairs of ‘rain cups.’ Poke holes with a paper clip in the bottom of four paper cups, and leave remaining four paper cups intact. When it’s time to make it “rain,” partially fill remaining four cups with blue water and pour water through the cups with holes.
2. Copy watershed labels onto overhead transparency for each small group and cut into individual labels: mouth, headwater, meander, tributary, drainage divide, sub-watershed, and direction of flow.
3. Assemble watershed model for classroom demonstration (see Procedure, step 2).
4. Set up the materials needed by each student group to assemble their own watershed model for the Assessment: pan, newspaper, aluminum foil, spray bottle or rain cups, and Watershed Labels.
