If your students have had little experience studying air photos, then you may want to begin with the map that shows the same information as is on Air Photo 1: Land Use and Land Cover: The Imprint of People. The map has five categories of land use with appropriate symbols indicated in the key, which are the same categories as shown on Air Photo 1: Land Use and Land Cover: The Imprint of People with lines. Categories include open space, forest, water, residential, and recreational. By using the map followed by the air photo, the transition from a more familiar graphic (the map) to a less familiar graphic (the air photo) will be easier.
