Land Use Lesson 2 : Measuring Land Use and Land Cover
Students will be working individually for the assessment activity. Provide each student with a copy of Air Photo 2: Land Use/Land Cover Assessment and the Amount of Each Land Use/Land Cover Assessment. It has four main land use features. Assign each student to do the following:
1. Identify the three main land uses in the air photograph.
2. Count the number of dots in each land use category using the dot planimeter.
3. Write the number of dots out of 100 for each class of land use on the student assessment sheet.
4. If the students have worked with percentages, they can complete the percentage column. Students will take the number of dots in each category and divide by the total times 100 to get a percentage.
5. On a separate sheet of paper, have students write a paragraph that identifies and compares two of the four land uses. Also have students identify two ways that people have changed the land.
