Air Quality - Lesson 7 : What Can We Do About Air Pollution?

1. Have students bring in examples throughout the year, from the newspaper or local television news, of real air pollution-related decisions made by local government or major local businesses. Set aside time periodically to discuss the choices involved in these decisions and their impact on the quality of life.

2. Organize another stakeholder meeting to address particle pollution nonattainment areas.

3. Engage the students in a Project A.I.R.E. activity. Suggested activities that link with this lesson are: Project A.I.R.E. Activity 15: Deciding to Clean the Air on the MEECS Air Quality CD and at http://www.epa.gov/region01/students/teacher/aire.html.

4. Smog City is an interactive program in which parameters can be changed to simulate smog episodes. It fits well with this lesson and several other lessons in this unit. It is available on-line at http://www.smogcity.com/welcome.htm.

5. Provide students with the make and model of two cars and have them use web-based tools to evaluate which is best for air quality. An enhancement lesson on the MEECS Air Quality CD addresses vehicles and air pollution in the form of a Web Quest.

6. Have students use information from the Web Quest on the MEECS Air Quality CD to come up with an advertising campaign to persuade consumers to purchase environmentally friendly vehicles. Consider spots for radio, television, print, or billboards.

7. Write a letter to someone (parent, grandparent, relative, friend) about the merits of purchasing a “green vehicle.” Students can get information on green vehicles from U.S. EPA’s Green Vehicle guide at http://www.epa.gov/greenvehicles/.
