A-CED Regular Tessellations of the plane

This task examines the ways in which the plane can be covered by regular polygons in a very strict arrangement called a regular tessellation. These tessellations are studied here using algebra, which enters the picture via the formula for the measure of the interior angles of a regular polygon (which should therefore be introduced or reviewed before beginning the task). The goal of the task is to use algebra in order to understand which tessellations of the plane with regular polygons are possible.

Acoustic Mirrors

Students play and record the “Mary Had a Little Lamb” song using musical instruments and analyze the intensity of the sound using free audio editing and recording software. Then they use hollow Styrofoam half-spheres as acoustic mirrors (devices that reflect and focus sound), determine the radius of curvature of the mirror and calculate its focal length. Students place a microphone at the acoustic mirror focal point, re-record their songs, and compare the sound intensity on plot spectrums generated from their recordings both with and without the acoustic mirrors. A worksheet and KWL chart are provided.

An interactive applet and associated web page that show the concept of adjacent angles (two angles that share a common leg). The applet shows three line segments with a common endpoint. The user can move the center one and see that the angles on both sides (the adjacent angles) of it are affected. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. After use in the classroom, students can access it again from any web browser at home or in the library with no login required. This Nrich problem follows on from Twisting and Turning and More Twisting and Turning and offers students the opportunity to explore sequences of fractions, make generalizations, and prove conjectures. The rope trick in the first problem offers a moment of surprise when the rope becomes untangled, and this prompts curious students to want to explain what is going on. This third problem in the sequence ties up all the loose ends still remaining.

Short pieces of chenille stem arranged inside a box look like a random jumble of line segments—until viewed in the proper perspective.

Note: This activity is detail oriented and time intensive. It’s done by threading a long length of fishing line through twenty small holes, and then attaching short pieces of chenille stem to create a suspended pattern. When you look through a viewing hole, that random-looking pattern resolves into the form of a chair. If you think being a watchmaker is something you’d hate, then you might want to rethink doing this Snack!
