Students have already had experience with patterns of numbers when studying linear, quadratic, and exponential functions in both Algebra 1 and Algebra 2. This is their first introduction to the formal notation used for sequences and summation notation for series. Students will explore series and summation notation. Arithmetic sequences and series, including finding common differences, terms, and partial sums will be examined in this unit. Students will also learn about geometric sequences and series, including finding common ratios, terms, partial sums, and infinite sums. Students will also explore how to write numbers with repeating decimals as fractions in simplest form using infinite geometric series and common ratio concepts.

The purpose of this task is to give students practice constructing functions that represent a quantity of interest in a context, and then interpreting features of the function in the light of that context. It can be used as either an assessment or a teaching task.

The primary purpose of this task is to lead students to a numerical and graphical understanding of the behavior of a rational function near a vertical asymptote, in terms of the expression defining the function. The canoe context focuses attention on the variables as numbers, rather than as abstract symbols.

This task is preliminary to F-LE Compounding Interest with a 5% Interest Rate which further develops the relationship between e and compound interest.

This task develops reasoning behind the general formula for balances under continuously compounded interest. While this task itself specifically addresses the standard (F-BF), building functions from a context, a auxiliary purpose is to introduce and motivate the number e, which plays a significant role in the (F-LE) domain of tasks.

This unit builds on the student's prior learning of how to find a rule that takes a given input value to exactly one output value. In this unit students will be able to identify when a relation is a function and use proper vocabulary (domain and range) and function notation.

Families of functions will be introduced in this unit including linear, absolute value, exponential and quadratic families of functions. Students will use graphs, tables and equations to identify the parent function and be able make a graph from the information in an equation and vice versa. This unit also introduces students to the concept of functions and their inverses. Students will write expressions for simple, linear functions that have an inverse.

Students will continue to use the concepts learned in this unit throughout the remainder of the course and in high school courses.

This lesson unit is intended to help teachers assess how well students are able to identify linear and quadratic relationships in a realistic context: the number of tiles of different types that are needed for a range of square tabletops. In particular, this unit aims to identify and help students who have difficulties with: choosing an appropriate, systematic way to collect and organize data; examining the data and looking for patterns; finding invariance and covariance in the numbers of different types of tile; generalizing using numerical, geometrical or algebraic structure; and describing and explaining findings clearly and effectively.
