Using scrap metal and spare parts, William Kamkwamba created a windmill to harness the wind and bring electricity and running water to his Malawian village. The resource includes a lesson plan/book card, a design challenge, and copy of a design thinking journal that provide guidance on using the book to inspire students' curiosity for design thinking. Maker Challenge: Develop a way to harness the wind by designing with Strawbees.
A document is included in the resources folder that lists the complete standards-alignment for this book activity.

Each task has at least one solution and some commentary that addresses important asects of the task and its potential use. Here are the first few lines of the commentary for this task: A rigid motion of the plane is a map of the plane to itself which preserves distances between points. Introduction to discrete and computational geometry. Topics covered: planar graphs, geometric graphs, the theory of crossings, extremal graph theory, arrangements of curves and points in the plane (mainly pseudolines and pseudocircles), problems involving distances, Gallai-Sylvester-type problems, Davenport-Schinzel sequences. Emphasis on teaching methods in combinatorial geometry. Many results presented are recent, and include open problems.

This is a project that follows the general PBL framework that can be used to help students master the concept of intermediate geometry. It was specifically designed to help students review the fundamental theorems of geometry involving lines, segments, angles, and basic shapes; use the properties of similarity and congruence to solve problems for geometric figures; master trigonometric ratios to solve right triangle problems; compare & contrast various geometric transformations and models; learn how to do geometric proofs and construct basic geometric figures; and understand the basic concepts related to the geometry of circles. Note that the project was designed and delivered per the North Carolina Math 2 curriculum and it can be customized to meet your own specific curriculum needs and resources.

This task presents a foundational result in geometry, presented with deliberately sparse guidance in order to allow a wide variety of approaches. Teachers should of course feel free to provide additional scaffolding to encourage solutions or thinking in one particular direction. We include three solutions which fall into two general approaches, one based on reference to previously-derived results (e.g., the Pythagorean Theorem), and another conducted in terms of the geometry of rigid transformations.
