This is a task from the Illustrative Mathematics website that is one part of a complete illustration of the standard to which it is aligned. Each task has at least one solution and some commentary that addresses important asects of the task and its potential use. Here are the first few lines of the commentary for this task: Suppose we are given a circle of radius $r$. The goal of this task is to construct an equilateral triangle whose three vertices lie on the circle. Supp...

Each task has at least one solution and some commentary that addresses important asects of the task and its potential use. Here are the first few lines of the commentary for this task: Jessica is working to construct an equilateral triangle with origami paper and uses the following steps. First she folds the paper in half and then unf...

This is a project that follows the general PBL framework that can be used to help students master the concept of intermediate geometry. It was specifically designed to help students review the fundamental theorems of geometry involving lines, segments, angles, and basic shapes; use the properties of similarity and congruence to solve problems for geometric figures; master trigonometric ratios to solve right triangle problems; compare & contrast various geometric transformations and models; learn how to do geometric proofs and construct basic geometric figures; and understand the basic concepts related to the geometry of circles. Note that the project was designed and delivered per the North Carolina Math 2 curriculum and it can be customized to meet your own specific curriculum needs and resources.

This task is primarily for instructive purposes but can be used for assessment as well. Parts (a) and (b) are good applications of geometric constructions using a compass and could be used for assessment purposes but the process is a bit long since there are six triangles which need to be constructed.

This task can be implemented in a variety of ways. For a class with previous exposure to properties of perpendicular bisectors, part (a) could be a quick exercise in geometric constructions, and an application of the result. Alternatively, this could be part of an introduction to perpendicular bisectors, culminating in a full proof that the three perpendicular bisectors are concurrent at the circumcenter of the triangle, an essentially complete proof of which is found in the solution below.

This course teaches the art of guessing results and solving problems without doing a proof or an exact calculation. Techniques include extreme-cases reasoning, dimensional analysis, successive approximation, discretization, generalization, and pictorial analysis. Applications include mental calculation, solid geometry, musical intervals, logarithms, integration, infinite series, solitaire, and differential equations. (No epsilons or deltas are harmed by taking this course.) This course is offered during the Independent Activities Period (IAP), which is a special 4-week term at MIT that runs from the first week of January until the end of the month.
