Students will learn to engage appropriately in a collaborative online setting and while using social media. The activities in this task card are going to focus on Netsmartz an online site to teach students netiquette.
In this lesson students will watch a video about polite Internet behavior (netiquette). They will engage in a class discussion about proper online behavior.
Selfies are everywhere and kids love to take them. But when is it ok to post or text them? What kinds of comments are appropriate? Students will become aware of the issues of privacy for theirselves and others, when posting photos and comments online.
It is so important that students learn about bullying at an early age. They need to learn what bullying is and how to respond to it. For children under eight, there is an app called the Allen Adventure for both iOs and Androids. The students will watch the video, play the game and complete the activities.
Text features is an important part of the English Language Arts informational writing curriculum. Students need to know to look for captions in nonfiction text and read them for help with understanding the text.
Google Scholar Citations provide a simple way for students to keep track of citations to their articles. When students are using Google Docs to write their papers, they can easily link and cite the articles used for references.
Zoterobib also known as Zbib is a free online tool that helps you cite anything from any device. Students are able to copy and paste a title or a book, website, photo, etc and Zbib will easily cite the source. Students can then copy and paste the bibliography into their work.
Students learn about their home state by creating it using Mr. Nussbaum’s Map Builder 2. This site is great for creating just about any land map imaginable!
Students will be directed to an informational article and/or video on different content areas & will be asked to use a note-taking chart to give credit for the author’s work & to restate in their own words.
First graders whether at home or school will be online using the Internet and need to know the basic rules of staying safe. ABYCA has a very good age appropriate video to share with young students on five rules to stay safe. There is even a quiz at the end to test their knowledge after viewing the video.
A Google Slide Deck introduction to the MITECS competency Digital Citizen - Students recognize the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected digital world, and they act in ways that are safe, legal and ethical.
Example: Eleventh graders in a Careers Course created LinkedIn accounts and entered a resume of their work and volunteer experiences. After careful research on topics about the kind of work they thought would be interesting to do, they composed short articles, which after a peer review and teacher review, they revised, before publishing the results on their LinkedIn account. During the composition time, the teacher taught about respectful commenting through an author study of comments on articles online. The students analyzed the comments in a fishbowl structure and explored what made comments constructive and positive versus disrespectful or toxic. After some practice dialoguing in a private discussion board on a wiki, students posted live comments on each other’s LinkedIn articles.

Students will be learning what a digital footprint is, how it is created from activity on the web, and ways to be online and create a positive footprint.
Students will design an avatar for use online while learning about the importance of managing digital identities, online safety, and fair use of images.
After watching the cyberbullying film Let's Fight It Together, students will play the Digizen game to personalize and reinforce learning from that film. The game allows you to log on to a computer and create your own character that goes into the same school where cyberbullying has taken place.
Bullying is a hot topic in schools today. Helping students understand bullying and how to react to bullying situations is difficult. Using the website Students Against Bullying students will explore the topic of bullying.
Students who use the computer need to realize that no matter how old they are, they are leaving digital footprints behind. Unlike footprints in the sand, it is very difficult to delete digital footprints. So if your kindergarten students are using the computer at school or at home, they need to learn what a digital footprint is.
The ISTE Standards for Students were introduced in 1998, revised in 2007 and then again in 2016. The standards are designed to "empower student voice and ensure that learning is a student-driven process of exploration, creativity and discovery no matter where they or their teachers are in the thoughtful integration of ed tech." (from ©2017 Clarity Innovations, Inc.) The standards provide a framework to transform teaching and learning with technology. There are seven standards and indicators for each standard to assist learning in the classroom.
Going online is so much fun! But how can you stay safe? Just like face to face field trips, there are also rules for staying safe on online trips. Students will learn skills to help them stay safe online through virtual field trips.
