In the EL Education model, teachers and school leaders collaborate to ensure that schoolwide, standards-aligned curriculum maps act as the foundation for all planning, instruction, and assessment. Curriculum maps describe a vertical sequence of academic and character targets that are to be addressed at each grade level and within each discipline. These targets become increasingly more sophisticated and rigorous as students progress through the grades. Curriculum maps also provide a year-at-a-glance view of what’s being taught and assessed across disciplines. They guard against unnecessary repetition of content across grades and ensure appropriate repetition of knowledge, skills, and Habits of Character as students move up through the grades.

CREATE for STEM is a Michigan State University-sponsored research institute with a broad mandate for Collaborative Research in Education, Assessment and Teaching Environments for the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
CREATE has five major focus areas for its work: Creating and Investigating Change in K-16 STEM Education, Educational Policy in STEM fields, Discipline-Based Undergraduate STEM Education, Developing Innovative and Digital Materials, and International Engagement with the Global STEM Education Community.

Within each of these areas, we build interdisciplinary and intergenerational research groups, foster new talent, provide seed money for initial work and support the grant writing process. CREATE is also a hub for the exchange of information and ideas, sponsoring conferences, workshops, seminars, and visiting scholars to enhance the interest in STEM Education and develop capacity in these fields here at MSU.

Countdown Fractions in this Nrich game offers a motivating context in which to practice calculating with fractions. There is usually more than one way of hitting the target, which offers an opportunity for rich discussion on the merits of alternative methods.

This Nrich activity, in line with the theme for this month, offers an 'action' to perform on a group of numbers which pupils can continue and explore. Or, you could think of the writing down of the 'description' of a sequence as an action performed on that sequence. It might particularly appeal to those pupils who enjoy number work but who are perhaps not used to succeeding in this area.

This Nrich interactive environment can be used with students, perhaps on an interactive whiteboard, for many different purposes. These might include, for example, exploring ideas associated with factors and multiples, or addition and subtraction. It is also an ideal context in which to investigate fractions and ratio, or to look at finding combinations.
