Teachers should begin teaching media literacy skills as soon as students begin using the Internet. In the first grade, students will be visiting approved sites that most likely will still have advertisements. The students will learn how to distinguish between the advertisements and the actual content they are supposed to be using.

Research shows that when students listen to a lecture that if they take notes they will better retain the information. The students can highlight the key ideas and add their own thoughts to help them study for a test.

Number Line by the Math Learning center is a useful tool for students to provide strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This extension also allows for creating number lines with fractions and negative numbers. This activity card can be used in grades tw0-five and can be adjusted for the students the teacher is working with.

In this activity, students will show their understanding of making numbers using base 10 blocks. The Number Pieces App allows students to manipulate base 10 blocks electronically to show their understanding of counting concepts.

Isatou Ceesay observed a growing problem in her community where people increasingly disposed of unwanted plastic bags, which accumulated into ugly heaps of trash. She found a way to be the agent of change by recycling the bags and transforming her community. The resource includes a lesson plan/book card, a design challenge, and copy of a design thinking journal that provide guidance on using the book to inspire students' curiosity for design thinking. Maker Challenge: Use plastic bags to develop a new product (i.e. jump rope).
