In this lesson students identify the ways families provide basic needs to their members.Students create and publish a booklet to display this information. This lesson is designed to have a class of older children buddy with the first graders to help with the reading and writing.

The reading strategy known as inferring is also one of the six basic process skills in science. How to apply the strategy in teaching K-5 reading and science is explained in this article from the free, online magazine Beyond Weather and the Water Cycle. The magazine is designed to prepare elementary teachers to teach climate science concepts while integrating inquiry-based science and literacy instruction.

Using a word/letter finder children will identify and differentiate letters and words. This is a beginning of the year Kindergarten activity.

Graduate Women at MIT (GWAMIT) is an institute-wide, student-led group founded in 2009. Its mission is to promote the personal and professional development of MIT's graduate women. GWAMIT welcomes all members of the MIT community, including men. This OCW site features selected videos from the two conferences GWAMIT runs each academic year: a Leadership Conference in the fall and an Empowerment Conference in the spring. It also provides a list of related readings and other resources.

This is a sample lesson that can be applied to any book to help students learn new vocabulary words.

Students will listen to a familiar story with repetitive lines that the children can remember. They will make puppets and retell the story in small groups with an adult volunteer or an older child.

This article examines the reading comprehension strategy known as making connections. It involves linking what is being read (the text) to what is already known (schema, or background knowledge). The author provides links to four online resources that will help readers use the strategy in K-5 science and literacy classrooms. Activities focus on the importance of children's names and helps build a sense of community in the classroom.

 These PD Modules were developed as part of the #GoOpen Michigan initiative.  This Module is a primer on OER. 

Students will be exposed to two non-fiction books, both telling the same true story. They will make connections, gain knowledge, and learn the history behind a well loved children's character. They will analyze the different perspectives presented by each author. After listening to the story students will answer questions.

To help improve the students oral reading fleuncy, this activity can be applied to any grade appropriate reading material.

Open Education Resources for Science Education PD

We are now posting open education resources for professional development! Our STEM Teaching Tools have been used to support extended professional development (PD) sessions. We are now posting open educational resource (OER) versions of those PD sessions. They include all of the resources that PD facilitators need to adapt and run the sessions—including slides, speaker notes, facilitator guide, and embedded resources. We are starting with PD focused on supporting 3D formative assessment. We will keep adding more over time.

Use the narrative text, "The Old Woman and Her Pig" to introduce comprehension strategies. Students will learn to make predictions and check them, along with clarifying and retelling.

This activity teaches children six question words: who, what, when, where, why and how.

This activity uses the book "The Patchwork Quilt", by Valerie Flournoy to give students the sense of family in the classroom community.
