Students will work in collaborative groups during the entire process and learn how to complete the task as a team. They discovered that the soybean was the perfect answer. Soon, Ford’s cars contained many soybean plastic parts, and Ford incorporated soybeans into every part of his life. He ate soybeans, he wore clothes made of soybean fabric, and he wanted to drive soybeans, too. Students will be designing a graphic based on the book they have finished reading in their guided reading group. They will use the app, Canva (www.canva.com), to create the graphic. The graphic will include key details, descriptions, themes, plot, summary, as well as other text evidence we have discussed throughout our guided reading time together. Students will create their graphics, and present them in a gallery walk for the rest of the class.
The content on their graphics will come from our guided reading group questions and discussions . They will record answers in their Google Classroom, based on the questions I post. Questions will be text dependent, and focus on comprehension, main idea, key details, point of view, and connections. Students will then synthesize the information and discussion topics to create a graphic about their book.

One type of fictional narrative is a tall tale. Students will be writing their own ending for a new tall tale they haven’t read yet. They will read all of the different endings they come up with and compare them with how the author, Mary Pope Osborne, actually ended the story. Planning and drafting are the first two steps. Students will create a draft using the narrative checklist and start by making the graphic organizer. Students will work around the room on their graphic organizers and share with classmates. Students will continue to work independently to complete their narratives and add dialogue. They will use the narrative checklist to evaluate their own writing, then revise and edit before writing a final copy.

Richard’s challenge was to protect their cattle from the lions who prowled the night just outside the barrier of acacia branches that surrounded the farm’s boma, or stockade. Though not well-educated, 12-year-old Richard loved tinkering with electronics. Using salvaged components, spending $10, he surrounded the boma with blinking lights, and the system works; it keeps lions away. His invention, Lion Lights, is now used in Africa, Asia, and South America to protect farm animals from predators. Students previously looked at maps of Michigan and discussed some of the cities and regions in our state. In reading, students began to read narratives, both fiction and nonfiction. For the entry event, students were asked to select an artifact that represented a special, small moment they experienced within the state of Michigan.
Students shared their artifacts and stories and plotted the setting from their stories on a map of Michigan. We realized our stories represented many regions in Michigan and could be used to describe many aspects of life as a Michigander. Students wanted to share these stories with others, so we began learning about narrative writing.
Typically, I use Google Slides for a mini-lesson, to allow students time to work on a specific, standard related task that will help build their Michigan small moment story, and then pull them together to share a few examples of student work. Students sometimes work alone, but often work with a partner or small group to brainstorm ideas, revise, and edit.
After, students will publish their ideas on Google Docs. When completed, they'll put their doc onto Google Sites or Google Slides and incorporate other media to enhance their story. Then, we'll print the story and create book covers using the iPad app Canva. We'll use both models to share with other classes within our school and hopefully with students from another country (I'm still working on finding an international school).
