Street lights of the same type will look brighter when they are …
Street lights of the same type will look brighter when they are close to you, and less bright when they are farther away. The same applies to astronomical objects: a given star will look brighter to a nearby observer than to an observer far away. In both cases, the difference in brightness can be used to deduce the relative distances of suitable objects. Standard candles, objects of constant intrinsic brightness or whose intrinsic brightness can be determined by careful measurements, are a key tool for astronomical distance determination. In this exploration, you will explore standard candles (and also effects that complicate distance measurements) in a simple everyday setting, namely that of street lights, using a digital camera and freely available software.

After teaching the Everyday Mathematics program for years and observing that students struggle with partial quotients long division, I realized the need to create a multiple day workshop on partial quotients division. By the end of the workshop, students will master dividing a four digit number by a one digit number using the strategy of partial quotient division. Both face to face and online instruction and practice will be used to accomplish this goal.

The Tapestry Segmentation from ESRI divides the US population into 67 different "market segments" - that is, groups of people who make about the same amount of money, live similar lifestyles, and have common preferences. This enormously rich set of data can be used to better understand communities around the country. It is especially useful to businesses who want to target their products and services to those who are most likely to buy them. Students will be successful with this lesson after they are able to review a number of Tapestry Segmentations and make models as to how the information can be used by business leaders to make decisions.

In this lesson, students prepare for and participate in a short text-based discussion in which they describe threats to human rights in Chapters 1-3 of Esperanza Rising, using both the Esperanza Rising text and the UDHR, and discuss how those threats made them feel. This is in preparation for the end of unit assessment in Lesson 12, in which students have the same discussion, but this time about Chapters 4-6 (RL.5.1, RI.5.1, W.5.9a, SL.5.1). At the beginning of the lesson, students complete an entrance ticket about how "Los Melones" fits into the overall structure of the story. This activity serves two purposes: Students will be answering the same question in exactly the same format on the End of Unit 1 Assessment about a different chapter of Esperanza Rising, and it is a lead-in to updating the Structure of Esperanza Rising anchor chart (RL.5.5). At the end of the lesson, students reflect on their performance in the discussion to suggest improvements for the next text-based discussion. Continue to use Goal 1 Conversation Cues to promote productive and equitable conversation. In this lesson, the habit of character focus is on working to become an ethical person. Students are introduced to the characteristics of empathy and compassion as they discuss how the threats to human rights make them feel. Students also continue to practice respect as they have a respectful collaborative discussion. The research reading that students complete for homework will help build both their vocabulary and knowledge pertaining to human rights. By participating in this volume of reading over a span of time, students will develop a wide base of knowledge about the world and the words that help describe and make sense of it.
