Students learn about linear programming (also called linear optimization) to solve engineering design problems. As they work through a word problem as a class, they learn about the ideas of constraints, feasibility and optimization related to graphing linear equalities. Then they apply this information to solve two practice engineering design problems related to optimizing materials and cost by graphing inequalities, determining coordinates and equations from their graphs, and solving their equations. It is suggested that students conduct the associated activity, Optimizing Pencils in a Tray, before this lesson, although either order is acceptable.

Although its sub-title is Making Calculus Delicious, the math featured in the book is primarily geometry and algebra, with students creating artistic interpretations of mathematical concepts and formulas. The translation of mathematics to art promoted fresh conceptual discussion and creative thinking, and inspires consideration of the elegance in mathematics.

This blended unit introduces students to linear inequalities and systems of inequalities. Students will algebraically and graphically verify solutions to linear inequalities and systems of linear inequalities.  Instruction and practice will be provided via Khan Academy.  As a capstone project, students will use linear programming to develop a diet plan for a celebrity; the diet plan requires students to research nutritional data and costs for two food products, while using linear programming to find the diet plan that satisfies the celebrity's daily nutritional needs at the lowest cost.

In this video lesson, students will learn about linear programming (LP) and will solve an LP problem using the graphical method. Its focus is on the famous "Stigler's diet" problem posed by the 1982 Nobel Laureate in economics, George Stigler. Based on his problem, students will formulate their own diet problem and solve it using the graphical method. The prerequisites to this lesson are basic algebra and geometry. The materials needed for the in-class activities include graphing paper and pencil. This lesson can be completed in one class of approximately one hour. If the teacher would like to cover the simplex algorithm by George Dantzig as an alternative solution method, an additional whole class period is suggested.

SmartGraphs: Describing Velocity

This web-based graphing activity explores the similarities and differences between Velocity vs. Time and Position vs. Time graphs. It interactively accepts user inputs in creating "prediction graphs", then provides real-time animations of the process being analyzed. Learners will annotate graphs to explain changes in motion, respond to question sets, and analyze why the two types of graphs appear as they do. It is appropriate for secondary physical science courses, and may also be used for remediation in preparatory high school physics courses. This item is part of the Concord Consortium, a nonprofit research and development organization dedicated to transforming education through technology. Users must register to access full functionality of all the tools available with SmartGraphs.
