This lesson unit provides an insight into the navigational methods of the Bronze Age Mediterranean peoples. The students explore the link between history and astronomical knowledge. Besides an overview of ancient seafaring in the Mediterranean, the students use activities to explore early navigational skills using the stars and constellations and their apparent nightly movement across the sky. In the course of the activities, they become familiar with the stellar constellations and how they are distributed across the northern and southern sky.

Open Education Resources for Science Education PD

We are now posting open education resources for professional development! Our STEM Teaching Tools have been used to support extended professional development (PD) sessions. We are now posting open educational resource (OER) versions of those PD sessions. They include all of the resources that PD facilitators need to adapt and run the sessions—including slides, speaker notes, facilitator guide, and embedded resources. We are starting with PD focused on supporting 3D formative assessment. We will keep adding more over time.

Physical Geography, also called earth science, is the study of our home planet and all of its components: its lands, waters, atmosphere, and interior. In this book, some chapters are devoted to the processes that shape the lands and impact people. Other chapters depict the processes of the atmosphere and its relationship to the planet’s surface and all our living creatures. For as long as people have been on the planet, humans have had to live within Earth’s boundaries. Now human life is having a profound effect on the planet. Several chapters are devoted to the effect people have on the planet. The journey to better understanding Earth begins here with an exploration of how scientists learn about the natural world and introduces you to the study of physical geography and earth science.

Social Studies Map Keys Lesson by Miss C's Classroom Resources
Rating
0.0 stars

This basic social studies lesson regarding map keys is most appropriate for kindergarten through third grade students with minimal modification needed, if any at all, but could be adjusted for any grade. The lesson targets three principal objectives: students will be able to identify and interpret the key of a map as well as the explicit symbols it defines, students will be able to practice reading the explicit symbols on a map using a key to define them, as well as students will be able to design a map with the explicit symbols defined in a key. The lesson reflects gradual release and focuses on interactive activities that directly involve students in their learning.
