Students have already had experience with patterns of numbers when studying linear, quadratic, and exponential functions in both Algebra 1 and Algebra 2. This is their first introduction to the formal notation used for sequences and summation notation for series. Students will explore series and summation notation. Arithmetic sequences and series, including finding common differences, terms, and partial sums will be examined in this unit. Students will also learn about geometric sequences and series, including finding common ratios, terms, partial sums, and infinite sums. Students will also explore how to write numbers with repeating decimals as fractions in simplest form using infinite geometric series and common ratio concepts.

All of us have felt sick at some point in our lives. Many times, we find ourselves asking, "What is the quickest way that I can start to feel better?" During this two-lesson unit, students study that question and determine which form of medicine delivery (pill, liquid, injection/shot) offers the fastest relief. This challenge question serves as a real-world context for learning all about flow rates. Students study how long various prescription methods take to introduce chemicals into our blood streams, as well as use flow rate to determine how increasing a person's heart rate can theoretically make medicines work more quickly. Students are introduced to engineering devices that simulate what occurs during the distribution of antibiotic cells in the body.

The basic properties of functions of one complex variable. Cauchy's theorem, holomorphic and meromorphic functions, residues, contour integrals, conformal mapping. Infinite series and products, the gamma function, the Mittag-Leffler theorem. Harmonic functions, Dirichlet's problem. This is an advanced undergraduate course dealing with calculus in one complex variable with geometric emphasis. Since the course Analysis I is a prerequisite, topological notions like compactness, connectedness, and related properties of continuous functions are taken for granted. This course offers biweekly problem sets with solutions, two term tests and a final exam, all with solutions.

After geometric series, this Nrich problem is one of the simplest infinite series with finite sum, all of whose terms are positive. This geometric demonstration of the result requires students to continue a pattern and to use several steps of reasoning to deduce that the sum is bounded by 2. Summing infinite geometric series also play an important role in the this proof, so this could be used to show an application of them in a larger proof. (It would be useful for students to be able to sum 12+14+18+⋯ before tackling this problem.)
