Finding an Using OER is a presentation for those who are beginning to use OER; it has places to begin looking for quality OER, and ways to use found resources.

Planning Instructional Designs with OER is a presentation that implements OER selection and use into the instructional design model.

In this module, we are going to examine ways to create your own OER by adapting other open educational resources, building upon existing resources, and mixing and matching a variety of OER.

This module focuses on building a base understanding of what is Open Educational Resources. As you journey through this module there are rich content and opportunities to deepen your knowledge working independently or with thought partners. Here are the outcomes you will accomplish from completing this course.

Open Education Week is an ideal time to hear from our community members who are leading open education initiatives on their campuses and across their states to reduce costs for students and empower faculty to enhance learning in their classrooms. We will hear from two OER librarians and a faculty member who are successfully growing awareness and adoption of open educational resources. They will share the successes and challenges of coordinating statewide efforts and influencing their colleagues to adopt OER in their courses.

We will explore how Maker-Teacher collaboration can facilitate innovation in the classroom. The Makers’ Projects are points of inspiration for Teachers as they experience DIY inquiry and design. Teachers will have time to brainstorm, create, reflect, and share how their experiences at Maker Faire and with Make Teacher Academy can translate into their teaching using online resources and collaborative tools. OER programs provide an opportunity for students to earn a certificate or associates degree without incurring the cost of textbooks for their courses. This can dramatically reduce the cost of attendance and has been estimated at 25% or more savings*. Most OER programs are developed to serve the neediest students who may otherwise have to defer college or take fewer courses due to prohibitive cost. Reaching the students who could most benefit most from enrolling in OER courses can prove to be a challenge in of itself. We will hear from speakers who have developed successful strategies at their colleges to create awareness and encourage underrepresented students to enroll in OER degree programs targeted at their academic success.

We will start the lesson discussing what open educational resources are. Please watch the video first and read through the content. It is important to understand the concept of open educational resources as it will be the base for the rest of the modules.

Why do open educational resources matter? What is the point of using OER? Below are some of the benefits of using open educational resources that I have seen while working with OER over the past several years.

Official Convening Videos from The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation's 2011 Open Educational Resources Grantees Meeting, OER 2011: The Impact of Open on Teaching and Learning. The meeting was a deep dive into the "O" of the OER movement and will explore issues around shifting OER from the niche to the mainstream in the years ahead. Spanning two and a half days, the convening highlighted accomplishments by OER grantees and provide a unique opportunity for collaboration on how OER can go further to make a significant and positive impact on teachers and learners worldwide.

Pressbooks is an Open Textbook platform. This Open (Canvas LMS) course demonstrates various methods of placing an open Pressbooks textbook in Canvas, including as a Navigation menu item and as links, PDFs or pages within Modules. It also includes various methods of providing students with a print version.
