The first of these word problems is a multiplication problem involving equal-sized groups. The next two reflect the two related division problems, namely, "How many groups?" and "How many in each group?"

This Nrich problem requires children to apply their knowledge of factors and multiples, and is a good way of making the link between sharing, division and multiples/factors. It may also be used to introduce learners to the fact that a problem can have more than one solution and that the solutions can be generalized. It can be approached in many different ways so can be a useful context in which to talk about different ways of recording and different methods of solving problems.

Students investigate how old the universe is and when important events took place in the universe and on Earth. They draw the universe timeline from the beginning until today on the scale of a year.

I want to use technology in a really useful way to make my math groups that would give me time to teach and support directly to my small groups and individuals.

I made a Google Form (Google Forms: https://www.google.com/forms/about/) for our district approved curriculum called Everyday Math (https://connected.mcgraw-hill.com/connected/login.do) Unit 2- Solving number stories.   The pre/post test is 8-10 questions on the main teaching points from the Unit. The feedback from that would help me make my small groups before I start teaching the lesson.

I will use Google Classroom for each math group (or one main Classroom that I share through to each group) that I can push out work to for their practice after the whole group math lesson each day.  It would function as a digital way of organizing and showing groups what they are doing, instead of the normal pocket chart or posted schedule in the classroom.  This gives me more flexibility on changes throughout the week, and the ability to link in any online resources.

Small group work could consist of journal pages, hands-on game, IXL practice (IXL.com), links to Khan Academy lessons (khanacademy.com), Nearpod lessons/practice (nearpod.com), as well as many other math support websites, apps or hands-on practice.  Groups would also meet with me throughout the week as part of the rotation (lower groups more often), but having small group activities ready to go will give groups who are not with me the independence to get work done effeciently each day. At the end of the unit, students will then take the same test, as a post-test to show growth.

I like the idea of doing this because if gives me an idea of where my students are before I start the unit.  Using a pre-made, short form helps making the groups an easy process.  Having a pre-made list of resources, helps make group work productive and successful.

Number Line by the Math Learning center is a useful tool for students to provide strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This extension also allows for creating number lines with fractions and negative numbers. This activity card can be used in grades tw0-five and can be adjusted for the students the teacher is working with.

This task is a YouCubed task. This activity allows students to explore how numbers are composed, by having them look at different ways of grouping them. There are many different strategies and methods students can use to come up with a solution. Students can use actual pennies, draw diagrams, and use charts to keep track of their findings. As students explore they will notice many different patterns in the numbers they are exploring.

Students learn about contact stress and its applications in engineering. They are introduced to the concept of heavy loads, such as buildings, elephants, people and traffic, and learn how those heavy loads apply contact stress. Through the analysis of their own footprints, students determine their contact stress.

This third grade math unit is composed of two parts that I created.  First, there are videos for the first six lessons of Math Expressions Unit 1 for Third Grade and their accompanying scripts.  These videos can be posted to a site like Google Classroom so that students can work at their own pace while the teacher helps those who need their attention the most.  Secondly, there is a formative assessment sheet for each lesson.

In this unit, 3rd graders practice making sense of one and two step number stories involving all four operations.  Practice may include diagrams, arrays, pictures, words, and number models.  Students will create, share, compare, and interpret representations, students will improve their problem-solving strategies, and students will firmly grasp that problems can be solved in more than one way.

SPECIFIC TO MY 3RD GRADE CLASSROOM:  There will be a strong focus on representing multiplication and division in this unit.

Both of the questions in this task are solved by the division problem 12Ö3 but what happens to the ribbon is different in each case.

In this unit, children learn how to use a variety of math tools/strategies to solve problems. This unit lays the foundation for developing multiplication and division strategies.
