In this interdisciplinary seminar, we explore a variety of visual and written tools for self exploration and self expression. Through discussion, written assignments, and directed exercises, students practice utilizing a variety of media to explore and express who they are.

The phenomenon is thermal expansion of copper. This demonstration allows an observer to see the effect of heating (and cooling) a copper tube. When heated, the copper tube lengthens and thickens. When cooled, the tube shrinks. The lengthening of the rod rotates a toothpick with an attached flag to make the expansion visible and measurable.

It’s easy to take today’s ubiquitous colored crayons for granted, but they were the result of one individual’s innovation. Biebow introduces Edwin Binney—a mustachioed man and head of a carbon black factory—who wished to make color-pigmented wax crayons that reflected the world outside. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Ukraine has been an independent democratic nation. Given its location between Europe and Russia, it often must balance the political tensions between Russia and the West. This tension came to a peak in late 2013, when the president of the Ukraine chose not to sign an economic agreement with the European Union and instead pursued closer ties to Russia. This upset many people living in Ukraine who took to the streets in extended protests resulting in the eventual removal of the Ukrainian president and several other high-level officials of the government. Shortly thereafter, a new pro-Europe leadership was installed by parliament. Amidst all this uncertainty and political change in Ukraine, Russian soldiers invaded Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula in March of 2014, taking control of airports, naval bases, and key bridges. Within weeks, Russia claimed Crimea as their own. Successful students will be able to ask questions to define how the cultural and ethnic diversity of this area might contribute to the current conflict.

During days 3-6 of the unit, students will complete a short, focused research assignment to learn about the characteristics of Sourthern Gothic Literature and to begin to view To Kill a Mockingbird through that lens. After the Great Depression struck, Ford especially wanted to support ailing farmers. For two years, Ford and his team researched ways to use farmers’ crops in his Ford Motor Company. They discovered that the soybean was the perfect answer. Soon, Ford’s cars contained many soybean plastic parts, and Ford incorporated soybeans into every part of his life. This course includes an introduction to the anthropological study of human sexuality, gender constructs, and the sociocultural systems that these are embedded in. Examines current critiques of Western philosophical and psychological traditions, and cross-cultural variability and universals of gender and sexuality.

Students will explore hybridization, selective breeding and genetic engineering through a jigsaw approach. Then they will go through a series of articles that help them formulate their own opinions about genetic manipulation. Lastly, they will debate the merits of genetic manipulation as a class.

Students explore heat transfer and energy efficiency using the context of energy efficient houses. They gain a solid understanding of the three types of heat transfer: radiation, convection and conduction, which are explained in detail and related to the real world. They learn about the many ways solar energy is used as a renewable energy source to reduce the emission of greenhouse gasses and operating costs. Students also explore ways in which a device can capitalize on the methods of heat transfer to produce a beneficial result. They are given the tools to calculate the heat transferred between a system and its surroundings.
