Using a Power Point Template to Facilitate a Project Presentation by Cognitively Impaired Students

PowerPoint templates lend themselves perfectly as a vehicle for Cognitively Impaired students to use for the creation of a project presentation. In this instance, it is to present a report on a planet of our Solar System, but this method can really be used for any topic/subject. By providing a structure/skeleton format that is age-appropriate and presents itself in a somewhat “professional” manner, even the simplest of information added to this presents itself in a nice format that we can readily share with peers and family. The structured nature of this project assures that all presentations will showcase nicely regardless of the students’ level of cognitive functioning.

This resource incorporates the 5E instructional model, allowing student engagement and collaboration through an interactive scaffolding activity. The literacy connection section of the resource incorporates literacy across the mathematics curriculum and the design challenge section allows students to think outside the box as they apply their own knowledge, skills, and abilities to elaborate on the final product.

Section 1 - The literacy connection section allows teachers to use this activity in a whole class setting and benefits students as it allows them to explore the story sequencing of the lifecycle of the caterpillar in an active and creative environment. This activity encourages active listening skills and student ownership as it encompasses the 5E instructional model.

Section 2 - The design challenge is an enrichment activity, where students are able to work as a team and construct an explanation for their design challenge. Allowing student ownership in the early ages of the design model enables student accountability in the learning process.

Original resource - This is a remix of The Very Hungry Caterpillar from Illustrative Mathematics resource https://tasks.illustrativemathematics.org/content-standards/tasks/1150.

A map of Washington DC was created in 1851 - a time of relative peace in the United States. Millard Fillmore was president, California had just become a state, and the Capitol building was undergoing an expansion project to accommodate the nation's growing size. By this point, Washington DC had been the nation's capital for about 60 years, although many buildings were newer than that since they had been destroyed in the "Burning of Washington" near the end of the War of 1812. In this lesson, successful students will use a "spyglass map" to explore the 1851 map in detail and compare and contrast with the present day layout and structure of Washington DC.
