The ancients Greeks were polytheistic — that is, they worshipped many gods. Their major gods and goddesses lived at the top of Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece, and myths described their lives and actions. In myths, gods often actively intervened in the day-to-day lives of humans. Myths were used to help explain the unknown and sometimes teach a lesson.

Students write a persuasive letter to the editor of a newspaper from a selected fictional character's perspective, focusing on a specific issue or situation explored in the novel.

This unit will be designed to be taught concurrently with other units throughout the beginning (1st quarter and beginning of 2nd quarter) of the school year.  It will focus on teaching grammar concepts in context.  Front-loading grammar instruction has been a focus of the district ELA department.

Using their new skills in deconstructing advertisements, students will look at advertisements through the lens of gender.  Students will be encouraged to critically analyze the cultural stereotypes for men and women. Students will discover the meaning behind and uses for adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions and other elements of grammar.   They will work in partners or groups to create a visual presentation that will teach classmates the most important and useful characteristics of their assigned grammar element.

Students will learn about helping and main verbs through videos and a website. They will memorize the 23 helping verbs through the "Jingle Bells" tune. To practice identifying helping verbs, they have the opportunity to play games. They will end the lesson by writing a story as a group that contains helping and main verbs.

In this blended unit students will review the parts of a story including characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end. Students will analyze a character based on their words, actions and thoughts. Students will describe complex characters, and identify character motivation giving supporting details from the text. They will explain how a character changes over the course of a narrative. Students will describe a setting and the events of a story using details from the text. Students will make inferences related to the details given in the story.

Over half of all English surnames used today are derived from the names of places where people lived. This type is known as a locative surname. For example, a man called John who lived near the marsh, might be known as John Marsh. John who lived in the dell was called John Dell. Other examples are John Brook, John Lake, and John Rivers.

Another common type of medieval byname derived from how a man spent his time. Every farming village had a blacksmith to forge iron tools, a miller to grind wheat, a carpenter to craft furniture, and many other specialists.

For this lesson, students will learn what linking verbs are through videos and a website. They will practice identifying linking verbs through online games. To end the lesson, they will write a paragraph about themselves using linking verbs.

For this assignment, students will review prepositions through an activity, a video, and a website. They will have an opportunity to prove their knowledge through a Quiz game and a worksheet. Once they understand how to write prepositions, they will end the lesson by using prepositions to describe a room in their house. They can share their assignment through Voicethread or a Padlet.

Using voice-to-text features to complete written assignments.  Students with reading/writing difficulties often struggle with getting their thoughts on paper.  Using a voice-to-text feature allows students to better focus on their thoughts and less on the mechanics of fine motor skills, spacing and spelling.

This unit will aid students in using a variety of sentence formats in their writing by describing simple, compound, and complex sentence structures.

Through forums, a video, and a slide show, students will learn how to recognize and write simple sentences, compound sentences, and complex sentence.
